In 1808, Mansfield was settled near the Mohican river and fertile farm lands. The railroads came in the 1840s (the Sandusky, Mansfield and Newark Railroad; and the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago Railway) and 1860's (and the Atlantic and Great Western Railroad). By 1888 Mansfield had become a center of manufacturing and trade in north-central Ohio.
